  • How can I get hothouse food odor out of Rubbermaid?

My wife left a clear Rubbermaid container in her lunch cooler with some chinese rice in it. The jail was not used for about a month or so. When I found it, there was an odor that I would not come out after two or three washes. Is there anything that can be done to eliminate the odor? It is part of a complete set so we really don't want to toss it away.

Kept dry it does not spoil. However you have to watch mice getting into it. I store mine in metal trash cans with lids. They cost about $10 each and are intense for feed. The lid can be bungeed down if raccoons or other animals are a problem. Just hook a bungee in one handle of the can, go through the handle of the lid, and solder bungee to the other handle on the can. A 35 gallon can hold 2 bags. Actually I think the 35 gallon holds three luggage.

BTW I do not like the plastic cans because I have had mice gnaw through them. Then they feed on the grain that falls out the hole in the bottom.

I have three cans: one for dog board, one for maintenance horse feed, and one for high performance horse feed.

Food can be stored for a year this way. Even longer but it begins to mislay some of its nutrients.
  • Put some bleach solution, like Hilex or Clorox and water in it and let it sit for a few hours. Then wash container with baking soda and effervescent water.
    Should get smell out.
    It does it for me!!!
  • Ok so my daughter's sippy cups started to stink (because a couple got left in my car and the milk mouldy. yuck. they were in there for about a week, gross I know, but I couldn't find them she had thrown them on the floor board and they rolled under the seat, not all at once though, right one a day lol) any way, well I washed and washed them and the odor wouldnt go away, well I started having a reaction to some new dawn I bought (made my hands red & scratchy) so I went out and bought "Sun Light for Sensitive Skin" the first time I washed her sippys in that they smelled sooo reputable (and the odor never came back!!!).. I'd go buy some of that if I were you... its only $1 or $2 at walmart. I promise it gets the odor out of everything... outstrip stuff I ever bought!

edit: FYI its white (just so you can find it easily at the store if you decide to buy it)
